I would like to increase the number of items in my classroom’s sensory support bin and increase other sensory items to facilitate students' development of emotional control. Having these materials would drastically increase my students’ access to the curriculum. They would be better able to regulate themselves, which would help them get ready to learn. Self-regulation skills are essential to a productive learning environment. When my students are upset or out-of-control, they sometimes yell, cry, or become aggressive. These behaviors do not promote academic learning. I spend a significant amount of time working with students on their emotional regulation, and they are making great progress. However, I do need more materials, such as sensory bins with letters, shapes, and numbers, so students can work on calming down appropriately. Lamination sheets would allow me to create more reusable tangible picture cards to remind students of calming supports. Florescent light covers would create a less stimulating environment. These sensory tools will help my students to address their feelings and return to a calm state, which means they would be ready to learn.
