  • Reading Helps Us Grow

    Funded Oct 9, 2019

For this project, we have used the stools and balls to create a flexible learning and seating environment for our classroom. The students can easily move the stools from the small group table to make a circle to have book club with their peers. In addition to be flexible, they find the new seating fun and visibly appealing to our classroom. It happens that our school colors are blue and orange, so the balls and the stools are orange and add a pop of color!

The stools can be used with a wobbly side or the flat side, so the students feel like they can control which side they want to sit on for group or book club. In addition, they have been using them for laptop work and with a clipboard. Having this flexibility changes the dynamics!

The students have been using their new books for book club within the classroom and also taking the books home to increase words read and time spent reading. I have seen a drastic improvement in time spent engaged in reading with our new books and with our new flexible seating! We have created a culture of reading this year!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Reeder

  • Work Smarter, Not Harder

    Funded Sep 27, 2019

Thank you for your generous donation. With this donation, the students can clearly choose the books they want to read. Now, the books are labeled and have a number attached to them, so when the students go "book shopping" there is no confusion.

This year, each student has a plastic bag where they take a book home to practice reading. Now, they can trade books in the morning as part of the routine for a new book. This gives them the opportunity to have more books to read in and out of school. The goal is to have an organized classroom library so the students can find exactly what they are looking for!

Every two weeks, the students go "book shopping" in the class. This means they have about 10-12 books in a reusable bag that they keep in the classroom. We create a culture of reading and a reading community in the class. This bag helps to ensure that everyone has a book ready to read. The bins and extra books has helped my students always have books ready to read and no where to go to find their books.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Reeder

  • Readers Make Good Leaders

    Funded Sep 18, 2019

My students have been overjoyed with the books and the couch and chair we have received for our classroom! This year, each student has a ziploc that they take back and forth to school with them filled with a book they can practice at home. This has drastically increased not only the amount of time spent reading, but also the number of words (vocabulary) that they are reading.

Recently, I did a mini-lesson on book selection and creating our reading community.

We came up with all of the resources we use to choose books such as friends, recommendations from websites, reading through a series, listening to book podcasts, and talking about books with friends - among other great strategies. We wrote down who and what helps us to stay reading. As a class, we decided that the number one strategy that helps all of us is to have your next book / books ready and waiting in the "to be read" stack or in a list they create. This strategy alone helped them to identify themselves as a reader a part of a community of readers. Now, you can see them lounging on the couch and at their desks reading.

Some students seemed overwhelmed by trying to finish a chapter book in a week. So, I did another mini-lesson on chunking the book up into reading sections using paperclips. I did an example using a book just over 100 pages and I showed them how I would place the clip around page 30-35, 60-65 and so on. I could finish this book in 3 nights! We all got in a circle and helped each other decide on how many nights we wanted to take to read the book and put in our paperclips. I did this alongside them and we have been celebrating our successes!

This donation has kept my students consistently reading and enjoying the printed word - thank you!.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Reeder

These materials will make a difference in my classroom by providing the students with high-interest books that they can access and read both in the classroom and at home. My goal is to provide them access to books that they may not have at home and can return them once they are finished. In addition, I know when I am reading, I like to be comfortable and I want to provide the students with optional seating. My students are ambitious, but need structured support to help them on their way to become fluent readers. We have students from a wide variety of backgrounds that are learning the English language as well as students with various behavior and academic needs. We are looking to expand their attitude toward reading as well as their vocabulary and language skills.
