The students that I service have a variety of needs, the biggest obstacle for many of them is to overcome is the urge to fulfill a sensory need. Most students that have come through my door have been sensory seeking, which means their body is seeking certain sensations such as deep pressure or inversion. This need can be so overwhelming for students that they struggle to stay still, feeling the need to run, jump, spin, or even run into things to feel that sensation. Behavior is communication, this is the most important piece of information I've learned during my teaching career. The behaviors my students exhibit tell me that they are seeking help with processing the world around them. The items I've added to my list will help my students to receive the sensory input their are seeking, thus making it possible for them to focus on tasks such as play schemes or teacher directed activities. When my students' sensory needs are met, they are visibly happier and excited about school! Helping them regulate themselves now will help them not only in 4K, but for the rest of their lives!
