The purpose of this project is to enhance the counseling program resources, whether it be for meeting with students individually, group settings, or during classroom guidance presentations. If you haven’t heard of “Kimochi” tools, they are great! They are a series of books and stuffed animals that help kids explore feelings that can be a little more difficult to understand, such as hurt, embarrassed, ashamed, or overwhelmed. The resources I have asked for will help me to introduce emotions during classroom guidance presentations, and help students identify tools that can utilize to manage difficult emotions. Helping to create a comfortable space for students to self-regulate is very important! The bean bag chairs and balance balls will help students who struggle with self-regulation and inattentiveness. While meeting with me for individual counseling, having comfortable and fun seating helps the students to release energy and focus more on learning new skills and techniques to improve emotional wellness. In addition, having stress balls and other sensory tools to support students are so great to have as a resource. I am a big fan of utilizing books during individual and group sessions. I feel that the books I have chosen for this project are engaging and will help the students learn to identify and express emotions in healthy and productive ways. I love keeping books in my room on display so that students can have an opportunity to take a break and ready meaningful stories. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them explore and grow their emotional awareness.
