The goal in removing the desks from the classroom is to create a more flexible, student-centered environment where students are able to move and change positions easier and quicker. This ultimately leads to less class time spent on re-arranging desks and optimal learning environments for students that often sit far too much during the school day. Currently, our classroom is cramped and re-arranging desks for games and activities takes up a lot of instructional time. With chairs that are easy to stack, stow, and move, students will have more opportunity to remain engaged. Our current desks are oddly shaped and difficult to use for activities like musical chairs, partnering, and group discussions. Some of the desks have years of wear and tear and a few have inappropriate words carved in to them. These chairs will help to implement CI (comprehensible input) practices, a new teaching methodology which allows students to acquire a language in the same way they learned their native language as opposed to endless grammar sheets. Overall, the new seating arrangement will give new energy and excitement to our French classroom that will allow for movement, fun, and learning.
