Alternate/flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. By having more choices of how and where to work, my students will gain some control of their environment and ultimately become more comfortable and ready to learn. Currently, they have a variety of desks and chair/stool combinations, as well as have quieter areas of the room on the floor with clipboards or lap trays. I also have a "Hug Tub" that is an option for the student that feels like they could use a 'squeeze' while they work. (It is a storage tote with a pillow and other accessories to help them feel squeezed and releases some oxytocin, or they feel less stressed-more loved hormone which then gets their brain ready for learning.) Having the Hokki stools and the Standing Desk will give students another option when working at a desk. The stools will be a great help for students that need to move their bodies and still work at a desk. They will be extremely beneficial for those students that just need to get the wiggles out to concentrate on the work to be done. The standing desk is a great way for the student that needs to be up and moving, still be able to work on their learning. They can be standing up and move around and still land back at their desks to do more reading/writing/problem-solving. Both of these seating options will be extremely beneficial in helping my students to be able to Grow Their Brains!
