This fall, I am moving from teaching 5th to 1st grade, and we will be teaching remotely for a large portion of our school year. With this project, I am focusing specifically on read aloud books that can be used as instructional tools to teach students about social issues. The focus of this project is to add new read aloud books to our collection that celebrate diversity and encourage discussion about race and racism. The books will serve as a great entry point into conversations and a way for us to learn about and practice showing kindness, compassion and empathy for others. Reading aloud to students is a great way to introduce new ideas and concepts and to facilitate real and engaging conversations. Now that we know we are learning remotely in this fall, I can read these books aloud to students via Zoom. The materials will make a great addition to some existing books and materials that I already have in my classroom, like multicultural crayons, paper, markers and other books about different cultures and skin colors.
