As a Spanish teacher, my top priority is to create memorable experiences for the students in my class. As an authentic and effective tool, I would like to integrate a children's library into my classroom. These books are ones that my high school students were familiar with as children and would now read in the target language and report out on what they read, both contextually and grammatically. This will be done individually as well as in groups with Literature Circles. This would be a real world experience in the target language. The requested book shelf would be the central location for this library. One of my fascinations is with the artist Frida Kahlo. In January, I ask each student to paint a piece of work by Frida Kahlo. The goal is to provide them with the cultural knowledge and understanding in regards to her life and work, as a female artist and Mexican cultural icon. We also will do this with Spanish artists Picasso ("Guernica") and Velazquez ("Las Meninas"). The art supplies and visual aids would provide the students an authentic opportunity. My classroom is my second home and I strongly value the importance of a positive and engaging learning environment for my students. My district provides the minimal amount of supplies, and items such as whiteboards, and office supplies would help to ensure my students received the best opportunity for engagement in my classroom. By integrating the target language and culture on a daily basis with these supplies, my hope for my students is to leave with the linguistic and cultural knowledge to apply to their lives now and in the future.
