  • Build A Band

    Funded Dec 28, 2024

Thank you for providing my students with the materials to start a band program at P.S.16 The Leonard Dunkly School.

Currently my students are preparing to start the instrument selection process. Students will be given a choice to select from flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. The material will allow us to fit students properly.

My students were very excited when seeing all the new equipment. This only cemented that they were going to be part of the P.S. 16 Leonard Dunkly Concert Band.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Witsell

  • PS/MS 29 Band

    Funded Aug 28, 2022

Thank you for your donations to the PS MS 29 Band. We were able to start a band program. We had a lunch band program where students would come during their recess once a week, an after school band program, and then 6th grade band electives.

We allowed students to choose between dance, sports, and music. At first the students were overwhelmed with the choices but eventfully found there groove.

We were able to play the first 5 to 6 notes by the end of the year and were able to have students play the beginning band song, "Let's Go Band" at the spring concert.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Witsell

  • Bringing Music Back

    Funded Aug 12, 2024

Thanks to you we were able to secure hand drums to our music room. Students have used these hand drums to learn and practice steady beat, beat vs rhythm, and accompany stories.

For Halloween, students used the hand drums as pumpkins when we did our retelling of the Five Little Pumpkins. Later on that year we have used hand drums to accompany our song, Burn Little Candle for our Winter Concert. A

As soon as we return to the classroom after winter break we will use the Hand drums to accompany the children's book, 10 Ways to Hear Snow!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Witsell

  • Music Supplies

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Thank You for your your donation. The students in my school were able to benefit from having these various supplies. They got a chance to play instruments that we would have never got an opportunity to learn and play.

My school is located in the south bronx. Our students had band three times a week. They were able to have reeds, oils, and music to last them for years. One of my students a clarinetist, got a chance to play a solo for the school and was really excited. Their favorite song to play was Let's Go Band By Andrew Balent.

For this we are so forever grateful!”

  • Musical Retellings

    Funded Feb 9, 2021

Thank you so much for your donations! My students and I are very grateful for your kindness and support. In my class we use books to explore instruments, movement, and history.

Your donations helped us learn about various artist such as Louis Armstrong and Leontyne Price. During Black History Month, we read Just A Lucky So and So. The students loved learning about how Louis Armstrong's childhood and how he received his first instrument. We learned how Leontyne Price came from rural Mississippi and became a world renowned soprano. Their stories are so inspirational to my students.

We look forward to reading and making music to with your thoughtful donations.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Witsell

  • Remote Music

    Funded Sep 1, 2020

My student's and I are forever grateful for your donations. Upon receiving their resources, I had to stop them for tearing the bag open. Here at the Melrose School, we are using the scarves, sleigh bells and shakers to demonstrate timbre, contour and thematic play. Our latest activity was Five Little Snowmen, students who had a scarf pretended to be the sun and they had to "melt" the other snowmen until they all melted. In our up coming activity we will be creating music to Ezra Jack Keat's "The Snowy Day". We will use the eggs to represent the sounds of walking through snow as well as create different pathways to walk in the snow. Thank You so much for contributing to the students at PSMS 29 The Melrose School.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Witsell

I am the Music Teacher at our school in the South Bronx. Due to COVID-19, many of my students opted to stay remote for the coming 2020-2021 school year. My goal in creating this list, is to obtain early childhood musical instruments that they will use at home during remote instruction. These instruments will help teach and reinforce musical concepts such as steady beat, high and low, long and short, and movement exploration. I would appreciate anything from a kind word of support to any supplies on this list for these wonderful young musicians. Thank You, Mr. Witsell
