Many of our students experience significant sensory processing impairments which inhibits their ability to self-regulate and engage in meaningful and structured activities. Many of our students demonstrate sensory seeking behaviors (i.e. jumping, running, fidgeting, etc.) and have trouble remaining seated during instruction. The use of weighted vests provides proprioceptive input (sensation to our muscles and joints responsible for body awareness) which elicits a calming response and decreases self-stimulating behaviors which impact the student's ability to learn as well as their peers. Providing these children with a weighted vest will significantly improve their ability to attend to and engage in meaningful and academic tasks throughout the day by aiding providing them with a tool to enable self-regulation.
