Caution: Readers at Work!

Funded Dec 8, 2019

The Caution: Readers at Work! project has made a huge impact on my classroom community. Because my students spend a great deal of time reading on a daily basis, these wonderful titles have made them, even more eager to read. Many of these stories have been read either independently, in reading partnerships or as a read aloud. As we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day, we read aloud the book "Martin's Big Words". The students absolutely loved this text! During, as well as after the reading, my students engaged in beautiful and heartfelt conversations relating to their hopes and dreams for the future. Some examples of the hopes that they shared both orally and in written form were hopes of putting an end to war, hopes that one day people will stop cutting down trees, as well as hopes that one day kids will stop bullying.

During my student's independent reading time, they have deeply engaged in reading these amazing texts! After reading, the students have written reading responses where they have followed characters throughout the texts, written about the lesson within the texts or shared the mood the author tried to convey within the texts. Many of these stories have become among my student's favorites. Such titles include: "One Cool Friend" by Toni Buzzeo, "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson, "A Unicorn Named Sparkle" by Amy Young and "Extra Yarn" by Mac Barnett.

Thank you for your gracious donations that have made it possible for my students to be exposed to various genres, texts and the ability to continue becoming lifelong readers! Thank you for enriching our daily lives with these beautiful stories! Thank you for filling our classroom library with such wonderful books! Thank you because in the words of Dr. Seuss "Reading can take you places you have never been before". Thank you for this beautiful gift called "books"!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Linares
