One thing my AP students need to practice is reading nonfiction. In previous English classes, they have focused on novels and plays, but our exam is based on nonfiction texts such as articles, letters and essays. They need to read arguments that make claims and that contain researched-based material, but one of their complaints is "that kind of reading is boring!" Matt Richtel's book "A Deadly Wandering: A Mystery, a Landmark Investigation, and the Astonishing Science of Attention in the Digital Age" is a fascinating book that takes place close to home and combines both research and a compelling story about the first teen involved in a major texting-and-driving lawsuit. My students will benefit academically from reading a book-length argument but also personally from the lessons about responsibility, carelessness and redemption this book teaches. I do worry about our teenagers today, those "digital natives" who are indeed addicted to their cellphones and who are unable to concentrate on their studies or their driving when they hear that notifications chime. We will have so much to discuss. I can't wait!
