  • News Magazines for Curious Minds

    Funded Jul 26, 2021

Thank you for supporting my project. The students loved reading Scholastic News and Time Magazines. They were great supplement for science and social studies units as well as reading instructions. What was neat to see as a classroom teacher was that towards the end of the school year many students were able to read the magazines independently! I enjoyed watching the students' proud faces as they shared what they learned from the magazines. The students also took the magazines home as part of their homework. Thank you for helping me give great learning opportunities to my students.”

  • Who Wants To Be a Math Fact Whiz?

    Funded Jul 17, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting this project. Learning math facts can be challenging for many, but the students really enjoyed using flash cards to practice their math fact skills. They worked together to quiz and help each other learn. Everyone was motivated to move to the next level of facts. It was great to see students encouraging each other to learn. The students even got to share some strategies for solving math facts. The students will take their cards home for the summer to practice more facts. They will be better prepared for second grade!”

  • Travel to Japan

    Funded May 14, 2021

What a fun filled week we had! My classroom was filled with excitement throughout this adventure. My students got to learn Japanese culture, tried out some food such as Japanese candy (everyone LOVED!) and seaweed (some students did not enjoy this too much:). They learned how to use chopsticks and tried eating Goldfish crackers. What amazed me the most was that none of them was afraid to try new things, and everyone had fun trying new experiences. They also thought it was pretty cool to be able to greet in Japanese and write their names in Japanese. It inspired me to start a new school year with a unit on Japan to share my home county every year. Thank you for your support!”

  • Breakout EDU for Critical Thinking

    Funded May 4, 2021

My students couldn't get enough of Breakout EDU Box experiences! Every time they found the box on my table, they were so excited to find out the tasks. Once they found the clues, they got busy solving the problems. I enjoyed observing my students talking and working together. At first some students were hesitant to even try or share their thinking, but as we tried and kept encouraging each other everyone became brave and comfortable to share their ideas. Children love to play games. Breakout EDU Box merge gaming and learning perfectly. Thank you for supporting my project and help my students have fun while learning!”

  • Reading Is Power!

    Funded May 4, 2021

My students were very excited to open the box to find amazing books from Scholastic! One boy loves pugs so he couldn't wait to get started on the Diary of Pug series books. Another student thought books that had yeti and unicorn were the best. My students worked hard to learn to read all year long. Then they were able to put their skills into reading for fun. The books we received are not just fun but very motivating to my students. They shared what books they read and made recommendations to one another as well. They also enjoyed taking comprehension tests and earning points in Accelerated Reading Program. Thank you su much for supporting my project and students!”

  • Pay It Forward With a Care Package for Teachers

    Funded Feb 29, 2020

Thank you for supporting my project. My students enjoyed learning the facts about coins and money with the books that we received. We have also been practicing counting coins during our daily math calendar routine. The magnetic coins are perfect for me to display on the board and count together. We have also discussed how people earn and spend money. Students enjoyed earning the classroom reward money by taking care of their materials and space, doing homework and showing good citizenship. Because of the COVID-19 guideline, I changed the classroom store to be an online shop, which the students enjoyed ordering the items for the care packages. The students were so proud to deliver the care package to the teachers. It was great to see them show gratitude and thoughtfulness towards others.”

  • Amazing Books

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Thank you for supporting my project and help me expand my classroom book collections. Read aloud time is one of my favorite things to share with my first graders. We have been having fun reading the books and discussing the lessons learned from reading them. Some of my students' favorite stories so far are "Cool Beans" "Love is Beautiful" "Dragons Love Tacos" and "Bad Apples." Personally I still remember the books that I read in first grade. I hope my students will remember these books when they grow up.”

  • Amazing Books for Guided Reading

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Thank you for supporting my project on guided reading books. My students love reading books that are just right fit books. They enjoy Pioneer Valley books and get excited to read books with fun characters such as Rosie and Bella the puppies, Oliver and Jasper the cats and Gilbert the pig. It brightens my day when my students ask if they can read their reading books. I always say I never say no to reading books! All of my students have blossomed as a reader this year. Guided reading leveled books have been a big part of supporting growing readers.”

  • Learning Sight Words With Snap Words!

    Funded Sep 16, 2020

I am so excited about this project! I have received the Snap Words sight word cards and started using them with my students right away. In this program, each sight word has illustration, little saying and action movement to go with it. We learn 10 words each week. Every day we read the words with the action movements. Surprisingly the students pick up on the action and saying for each word very quickly, which leads them to learn to read the sight words! Teaching sight words can be very tricky since learners have to heavily rely on their visual memory, and it's simply difficult for some. Using Snap Words will definitely help all types of learners learn the sight words! Thank you so much for your support!”

My students attend a public school in a small town in Iowa. Our school has been in a budget crisis just like many other schools in our state, which means not much funding for new materials for the classrooms. We do the best we can with what we have, but these children deserve more!
