  • Caring Is Sharing

    Funded Dec 5, 2023

Thank you so much for the donation of baby wipes and pull-ups. The baby wipes and pull-ups are important for caring for daily toileting needs of the preschoolers. Three of the students are working on potty training at home and school. The items are being used daily by my special education preschool students at Mt. Hermon Preschool Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. The parents are so grateful for the donation because this has allowed the parents to save money and purchase other essentials for their young children.

Once again, I appreciate your donation and kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Colbert

  • Let's Get Squishy

    Funded Dec 31, 2019

Thank you so much for the Donors Choose materials. The sensory materials (jumbo tactile tangle, sensory shapes, liquid sensory windows, sensory tubes, squish-squeeze sensory beads, modeling bead foam), jumbo magnetic letters, and storage unit were very much appreciated by the staff and preschool students. The items were used daily in our classroom during transitions and center time. The items provided additional sensory materials in the classroom that were used for instruction and transitions.

Using the jumbo tactile tangle helped one student remain calm as she used it as a "fidget toy." The sensory shapes were a great alternative activity in that the students could use their senses as they explored the gel filled shapes. Everyone loved the magnetic letters as they practiced arranging the letters in alphabetical order. The storage unit allowed student access to the materials at all times.

All of the materials were a big hit in the classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Colbert

The sensory materials will enhance the small collection of hands-on materials we already have in the classroom. The children learn best when they are able to touch and explore. The children use the sand table, play dough, and fidget toys each day. However, due to the special needs of the students they need an assortment of sensory items to use. The sensory beads, sensory shapes, sensory tubes, liquid sensory windows, and magnetic letters will be used for hands-on learning center play. The children will be able to see, touch, smell and explore as they play. With these new materials they will be able to choose from a variety of materials during center time. Sensory play helps to calm children with Autism. As they touch, the children seem to laugh more and we hear more expressive language (lots of sounds and words)! So as the children play, they are improving their communication skills and social skills. My students will be so excited to receive the new sensory items! This project will help to continue improve their preschool experience.
