Our district uses a new science curriculum in which students are asked to solve a complex problem, but first need to solve that problem by asking their own questions. Asking questions is an essential component of authentic science, and aids in developing critical thinking skills. In theory, it seems easy enough to have students ask their own questions. In practice, it is much more difficult. Who usually asks the questions? Teachers. Who answers the questions? Students. It can be difficult to help students develop insightful, investigative questions. A strategy that can strengthen inquiry skills in students is creating a bubble map through consensus discussions. A bubble map is very similar to a concept map, and is completely student generated. The bubble map is created during the first lesson of the unit and is referred to at the end of every subsequent lesson. The materials I am requesting will help me facilitate instruction that will strength student questioning abilities, establish buy-in, validate ideas, and encourage reflection on learning.
