When students visit the library, they not only check books out or return them, sometimes they have the opportunity to relax and read. We have a large television that plays music or book trailers, and we encourage students to find a just-right book and read. For students who have a hard time sitting still, it will help them to have a large stuffed animal to read to. This is less distracting than reading to a friend, and would also provide interest in the library setting. Specifically, I would like to provide stuffed animals that align with books we have in our current collection. It's excellent fluency practice to have students read aloud, and many kids will benefit from this fun opportunity. For the speedy page-flippers, they can slow down and relax with their stuffed animal of choice for the day. For the struggling reader, they can feel less self-conscious, knowing it's just them and a cuddly creature! We hope to continue to provide a literary space for all students to feel comfortable, calm, and relaxed. This is another step toward that end.
