My students are budding bilinguals that don't even realize it yet! Most students when learning a new language encounter feelings of confusion, difficulty, and doubt. These are all normal but can be overwhelming in middle school. This year, I plan to utilize a language corner where students are able to understand their growth progress in the language with the use of oral language growth portfolios. This corner should be as inviting and comfortable as possible. Imagine, a soft rug to occupy an otherwise ordinary corner in the classroom for one on one check ins with their teacher. Here they will be able to express themselves and reflect on their own language growth. Glue sticks, poly sheets, and sticky notes will help my students stay organized by offering them the chance to take ownership of the language they are learning. They will learn how to truly reflect on their own language progress, and determine where they would like to go all while getting feedback to help them understand how to achieve their goals. It will be challenging this year, but I am hopeful that the language corner will allow my students to become confident in where they are in the language and take ownership in where they would like to see themselves by the end of the year.
