For the Love of Reading
Funded Mar 8, 2022Having Scholastic News as a resource in my classroom has been fantastic. We are doing a non-fiction unit and the magazines are a perfect fit! I have been teaching about text features and the magazines have most of them. They have beautiful colored illustrations and pictures, captions, bold words, and words you should know in in every issue to teach them vocabulary within the article. Also, It's nice to be able to print out different leveled texts on the same article! I don't have to go searching for hours for something interesting and then rewrite it for students who struggle so that it is reachable for them. The magazine is also great for getting students to find evidence to a claim they have made. The articles are short enough to demonstrate a skill, but not too long where it gets confusing. The language is just rigorous enough but reachable for them. I also love that they have a digital platform. I can dispaly the articles on the board, mark them up to demonstrate what to do and there are videos to preview a topic so they have context! Plus, if we go remote, I can assign the work to the Google Classroom!
Reading in my classroom consists of a lesson, they try it, we share out and then they usually read for whatever reamaining time there is. There is also a time dedicated for just reading without a lesson during the week. I have noticed that students want to read their Scholastic News for fun. I see them take out their magazines and talk about what they read about.
One student, Liz, especially likes to read the section in the magazine where there is a "Sticky Situation" where there is a problem that she likes to debate with her friends about. The articles are of high interest for the students. They are taught about real world issues in a kid-friendly way. Even my student who is not interested in reading, Nate, loves to read the magazine. I often see him reading the magazine as a choice when it is independent reading time.
I just wanted to thank you for funding my project. PS/MS 164Q is a Title I school, and not many families could afford the subscription. I am truly grateful.”

Help Stop Falling Chart Paper!
Funded Nov 23, 2020Thank you so much for donating the whiteboard to us. It had made teaching so much easier and productive. Students were able to see what I was writing without the interruption of me having to constantly rearranging chart paper.
It was a relief because I was able to focus on what my teaching goal was rather than having the constant worry of the paper falling . The whiteboard was wonderful as well. I was able to write or draw quick explanations when students struggles without wasting paper on things that only needed a quick demonstration.
Thank you so much for your generosity!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Con Edison and one other donor. An Excellent Easel for Little Investigators
Funded Oct 24, 2019Thank you so very much for your donation towards my project "Excellent Easel for Little Investigators." When I first received the easel and the students arrived, they were fascinated with it. We began using it right away! One student asked me,"Where did you get it?" I replied, "Donors Choose!" I explained what the company does and told them that a special donor named Sarah helped us get our easel. They couldn't believe that there were people that really cared. "Sarah is really nice!" one of my students exclaimed.
Now the students can actually write on charts because the easel is just their size for them to write and help create their own charts for Science. They also LOVE the 800 crayons! Many students did not have crayons, so when we had to draw what they observed, they had to share the crayons that we had. Now, the students are able to get the color they need and they don't have to wait for the color they need!
The donation really made a difference in my class. My students and I are extremely thankful for everything.”
