Before college, it is important that all readers and writers practice study skills such as annotation and picking out key information (post-its and hi-liters!), and struggling readers build the necessary skills to access higher-level texts.
My co-teacher and I will use the graphic novels to pique interest in hesitant readers, and to support their comprehension. They will not use any of the supportive texts (graphic novels, No Fear) as a replacement, but rather as an aid to comprehension of the original text. Students will use the texts side-by-side.
We will also use some of the tangible learning aids to assist students with learning differences (fidget bouncers; reading strips) and encourage students to use these independently - building self-management skills for college!
