My students love exploring nonfiction text. They love learning about real life things from animals and life cycles, to learning about influential people in history. Having a subscription to Scholastic News will give my students access to informational text that is directly related to what is happening in the world right now. Scholastic News is a great way to bring real life current events into the classroom. It will allow students to learn about the world that they are living and provide some ideas for meaningful conversations! Scholastic News is written at a reading level that will allow first grade students to access the information and make sense of it with some support from the teacher. Scholastic News is very engaging for students as it is in a "magazine format" that includes high definition pictures and covers multiple topics in one issue. My students will be thrilled to take their very own copy of the Scholastic News articles home to share with their adults at home! I plan to use Scholastic News to help bring awareness to real life current events into our classroom. It will be a great tool to help facilitate conversations about new learnings about the world that they are living in! Being able to speak and share ideas clearly is a skill that first graders must have. First graders also write to share information. I plan on using Scholastic News to help support by providing topics for informational writing in the classroom. There are many ways that Scholastic News can be used to help enrich current curriculum, I plan to use it for listening, speaking, and writing.
