The pandemic has had a negative impact on my students both socially and academically. Many students have a hard time grasping math concepts during a normal school year. Time out of the classroom due to Covid has made it difficult for some students to learn math. This has inspired me to undertake a project to “Make Math Come Alive”. In my 7th grade classes, I plan to teach a unit on Geometry and Measurement. I would like to obtain a digital die-cutting machine, the Silhouette Portrait, and materials to cut out the nets of geometric solids that the students can assemble to help them calculate the surface area and volume of the solids. The students will then be able to take the solids they create home with them. In addition, they will be able to work in groups on their solids, and this will help their social skills after being isolated during the pandemic. I would also like to purchase basic calculators for my students to aid in their calculations. In my Algebra classes, I teach regression lines and correlation coefficients with a graphing calculator. I would like to obtain emulator software for the TI-84 graphing calculator so the students will be able to follow my steps. In addition, I can record my steps on the software and upload the visual to Google Classroom for them to follow at home. These materials for my 7th grade and Algebra classes will allow math to come alive for my students with the funding of this project.
