Self Expression and Materials Exploration
Funded Sep 20, 2023Students have been thrilled by their new supplies. We have been working on their use of different mediums, including choice based art days where they are able to pick which mediums they would like to work in. They have also been practicing taking good care of the materials, sharing, and cleaning up and capping all materials.
The watercolors have been extremely helpful and useful for a 7th and 8th grade self portrait project, in which they were able to mix their skin tone. The 5th, 6th, and 7th graders have also been using the watercolors for their own Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden inspired depiction of their neighborhoods. First, students used their computers for reference images to draw different buildings and then painted them, cut them out, and collaged them together to create a layered and overlapped cityscape celebrating our community.
The new markers have been helpful for our 8th grade in creating gorgeous Jen Stark inspired drip drawings with vibrant colors. All of the new material has been helpful in getting students to use mediums that they love, can take care of, and that inspire them. It has been a joy to see.”

Funded Jul 15, 2021Students are using their personal tote bags to carry their art kits! My first grade class in particular are delighted and elated to have their own personal tote bag to carry their art supplies in. Each student was given a tote bag where they can keep their sketch book, and other art supplies for our art class.
The idea was born out of last years production of art kits, using plastic zip lock bags. Each student in our school had an art kit that was personal to them with all of their own materials.
The plastic bag however, would get worn out or even thrown away at home. The tote bags ensure each student can take care of their supplies. This gives them ownership over their supplies and sketchbook. They love having the tote bags, and were so excited when they were handed out at the beginning of the year!”

Funded Oct 25, 2020Throughout this year of change, it has been imperative for me to be able to supply my students with some constants in their life. Having art with me regularly, and knowing that they will have supplies that they can use is so important! We have been able to work with supplies students are familiar with and love. My students were able to all receive sketchbooks, and watercolor sets so that they could continue their love of painting. We also recieved nice drawing pencils which has been such a joy for students to discover.
We have been able to study Picasso self portraits, Frida Kahlo self portraits, Paul Klee inspired castles and we are currently in a unit studying a Dominican artist who uses her still lives in beautiful and new ways. We have been using our sketch books all along to draft our ideas, and will use the nice drawing pencils to do our final still life draft inspired by the students Dominican herritage and cultural pride. Every time we sign into google meets or I walk into their classrooms, they are ready with their artkits, their watercolor sets, their pencils, and their notebooks, eager for our new art adventure! Thank you for helping us be able to take new art adventures each week.”

Funded Aug 19, 2020I want to express my sincere and utmost gratitude for aiding my students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Through your generous donations, each student, both in person and remote has in their hands, an Art Kit. This Art Kit includes a sketchbook, watercolors, glue stick, nice paint brush, and nice drawing paper. All of my students, whether they chose fully remote or blended learning have been able to utilize the same supplies, allowing us to do the same projects both in school and at home.
Students have been overjoyed to have their own personal supplies. When I handed out the supplies to my students in class, they often expressed great glee in being able to maintain and take care of their notebooks and watercolor sets. They take pride in washing their brushes, and doing sketches in their sketchbooks. They are ready for their final paper and love being able to take out their art kit as soon as I walk into the room or sign into Google Classroom.
In grades K-8, we study a new artist, and then create artwork inspired by their style. This year we have already explored work by Yayoi Kusama, Paul Klee, Charles Burchfield, and Kandinsky. We have also done color wheels and color monsters (inspired by our feelings). These artists and projects have helped students to use colors in new ways, see things differently, and celebrate their own feelings. Through your generous donations my students are able to experience something they had thought was inconceivable, their very own supplies to use and take care of-it has supplied immense comfort to all of us.”
