I am currently enrolled in a Master’s program focusing on children, trauma, and grief. Research has found that physical education and anything involving movement, play, and joyful engagement encourages more success in emotional-engagement and academic and cognitive capacities of the mind. Especially in children with anger, anxiety, refugee situations, and students diagnosed with a variety of learning, behavioral, and/or social-emotional disorders, lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and or had traumatic or challenging home-life situations. As a teacher in my community, I see many students that fit into at least one of these categories. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and what works best for them. When students have choices, they feel that the classroom belongs to them, not just the teacher. Using flexible seating in first grade will be an important tool for introducing students to the idea of student efficacy by encouraging students to be active participants in their own learning and being in charge of their own learning by making choices that will impact their learning. The overall purpose of my application is to provide my students with engaging options that will lead to more emotional-social stability as well as academic success in the classroom. Flexible seating would help encourage more academic success by allowing the students to participate in healthy movements and kinesthetic learning without disruption.
