We are requesting 60 copies of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The goal of this unit is to introduce the students to schools of literary criticism that are not usually taught in an English class, mainly Postmodernism, Ecocriticism and Psychoanalytic, as a way to transition them from AP Language into their senior year classes. We will also further explore student experience with Gender, Formalism, and New Criticism, schools of literary analysis they have focused on in AP Language. The Road offers an opportunity to apply these skills to a relatively modern work of fiction that received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. This novel will help enrich their argumentative and literary analysis skills through discussion, extended response, essays, and debates. We will connect to non-fiction articles on psychology and sociology with particular focus on survival and motivation, family roles, and dreams to give the student's another lens with which to analyze the novel. In the end, students will present an analysis of the novel through one of the lenses mentioned above to the entire class.
