  • Reading, Writing, and Shelving

    Funded Aug 8, 2023

I wanted to say thank you again for your generous donations! It has been so wonderful to have the shelves and storage supplies that you provided for our classroom. They have helped make routines in our classroom run more smoothly.

We have a new math curriculum this year where students get their own books (exciting!). Our table groups are able to access the supplies for their table with ease due to our new shelves and tubs. Luckily our Table Captains are up to the job!

I am also loving the rolling cart. It helps me stay organized with the reading assistant who comes in and supports reading groups in my classroom. I am able to put everything on the cart and we can wheel it to the table where it is needed.

Thank you again for all of the support!”

  • Positive Behavior Incentives for Fabulous First Graders

    Funded Feb 9, 2023

Thank you so much for the incentives, sharpies, and liquid timers.

The incentives have been so fun! The kids are very motivated to earn our end of day prize as well as our end of week prize. They are obsessed with the squishies and excited to see what the new prize will be at the end of the day. It is especially helpful to have something fun to earn as we are getting closer to the end of the year.

The liquid timers have been so great in our calming corner. They are such a calming tool, as well as a way to remind students to return to learning once they are feeling calm again.

The sharpies have also been great for classroom projects! We just did a big animal research project and we used them to outline our diagrams and labels. They look amazing!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McCormick

  • Classroom Infrastructure Is a Bridge to Learning

    Funded Aug 23, 2022

Thank you so much for your donations to our easel and mailboxes! These are items that we use every single day in our classroom. They have really improved the flow of the classroom.

We use the easel for every single lesson. We are able to use one side as a whiteboard and the other side with chart paper. This is the place where students share ideas, I give examples, and we practice and learn together. I was previously using a whiteboard on the wall, but this easel allows me to be closer to the students, which is more appropriate for first grade learners.

When I introduced the mailboxes to the students they got so excited to have their very own mailbox! It is so much smoother to have students put things in their mailboxes rather than having to get into their backpacks each time they need to take work home. Thank you so much for your support- we really, really appreciate it!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McCormick

  • Diverse Books for Fabulous First Graders!

    Funded Sep 16, 2020

Thank you SO much for your support in this project. I can't tell you how excited I was to open each new box of books, knowing the impact that they can have in my classroom. My students were thrilled as well and were extremely eager to see the new books.

These new texts will help my class connect to reading. First grade is a really important time in a readers' life where many students move from "reading the pictures" in books to "reading the words!" These new books, filled with beautiful art that represents the students in my class, will be an excellent tool to motivate readers. Getting students excited about reading, leads to more reading, which leads to better readers!

These books will also help me have big conversations in my classroom. Sometimes adults underestimate the ability of younger learners to understand the world. It can be challenging to bring up big topics in the classroom, but a really great children's book helps immensely! Thank you for for this wonderful gift!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McCormick

  • Little Learners Listen to Reading!

    Funded Dec 11, 2019

We have been so excited to have these new additions to our Listening to Reading station! The students were so surprised and excited to see how new and fully functional everything is! Such an upgrade from our old headphones that rarely worked. They have also had a chance to explore and engage with reading in a new way, and practice their fluency in a new way.

One of my students who is often distracted and struggles to engage with learning has been extra enthusiastic about being able to use the mp3 players. It is amazing how something exciting and new can engage students in learning in new ways.

Thank you so much for your generous donations and giving us new ways to love reading!”

  • Listening Center Improvement!

    Funded Jan 20, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donations to our Listening Center! We desperately needed new headphones to go with the MP3 players and Chromebooks that we use in our classroom. Now more students are able to use these materials at a time and the headphones actually work!

My reading groups are able to run more smoothly now that more students have opportunities for particularly engaging reading activities. Also the students that I am working with individually are able to get more direct, uninterrupted time in their groups. Having to spend less time troubleshooting technology, student learning is enhanced!

My class and I have been overwhelmed with your generosity. Room 2 is so lucky!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McCormick

My first graders are learning to read, and my goal is to get them engaged in reading in every way possible. I want my students to love reading and identify as readers. The MP3 players will be used in a listening center during our guided reading block. The MP3 players will provide the students the opportunity to listen to the stories, as they follow along in their own books. Giving the option to "listen to reading" will help my students build their fluency and transport them to new worlds! Listening to books read aloud gives students the chance to read and engage with more challenging text, as well as hear what good reading sounds like.
