Our third grade class will be doing a huge research project on Native Americans this year. Our focus will be on specific tribes from the area around where we live. This project will integrate social studies and writing as well as build teamwork and presentation skills for the students. We will begin by learning basic information about Native Americans (who were they, when did/do they exist, why are they important, etc.). Students will then be placed into teams, or tribes, where they will be given one of 6 Native American tribes to research together. Each student will draft and type a final version of a research paragraph on their tribe. Tribes will work together to create a poster using each of their paragraphs, diagrams, real photos, and captions (like in a non-fiction book!) to present to the class. This project will provided a special opportunity for parents to be involved in their child's learning. After all projects are completed, our class will hold a museum exhibit for parents and staff of the school to view their presentations. Tribes will set up their poster boards around the room and present their paragraphs and posters to family, friends, and staff that come to see it! The goal for this exhibit is to allow students to share their joy and excitement of learning with others outside of the classroom. Another goal is to get families and administration from our building a special opportunity to connect with student learning and support their growth in the classroom!
