Got 99 Problems but a Stitch Ain't 1
Funded Aug 3, 2022We have just finished our 1st group of "Sew What?" sewist. Over the last six weeks five dedicated 5th graders have stayed after school to learn: the parts of the sewing machine, sewing a straight and curve line, threading a needle, sewing machine safety, and sewing on a button. We completed several different make and take projects such as: a book buddy, a fleece hat and our version of "designer" chip bags. The students proudly wore and displayed the makes to teachers, friends and parents.
When I first unpacked the sewing machine, to organize our "Sew What" club area, the students were trying to figure out what the new machine was. When I said I was going to start a sewing class they were so excited that I was asked daily when it would start.
The fifth grade group was so successful that one of the students is getting a sewing machine for Christmas. He wants to continue not only at school but at home too. This has filled my heart with joy to know the sewing spark has been lit. The next group for our "Sew What?" sewist will be fourth grade. Learning basics and new projects.”
With gratitude,
