Edward A. Abbott's novel, Flatland, tells the story of a square who travels on a journey through the dimensions. The book explains how to visualize different dimensions through the square's experience. My students struggle with visualizing concepts in mathematics. I want to help my students start thinking critically about how to visualize different concepts and Flatland is a perfect medium to teach kids how to do this. After reading the book, I want my kids to work together to draw a picture of what the world looks like in the first, second, third, and even fourth dimension! This will help them visualize geometric figures in Euclidean space.
