  • My students Enjoyed Long Way Down So Much!

    Funded May 13, 2022

It is so heartwarming to know that there are people like you who support my students’ pursuit for finding joy in reading. These last few weeks will really make a difference in how we close the year. I am looking forward to creating these memories and activities using the resources that you made possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Heywood

  • Bibliotherapy! Mental Health Can be Alleviated by This Project.

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

In my 18 years of teaching, last year and this year have been the hardest. The books that I got from our donors have really alleviated the stress that my students were going through. We used some of the books for independent y and we used some as class sets for reading novels. The books were culturally relevant and my students truly appreciated the themes presented in the books they were reading. One student who graduated last year asked to have the book (Long Way Down) because he wants to have a copy of the first book he read independently. He told me that it reminded him of his neighborhood. My other students told me that they love the choices that were given to them. The discussions that came out of the books were authentic and generative.”

  • Help Me Give My SPED Students More Individualized Instruction!

    Funded Apr 24, 2022

I am so happy that my students will have this program this marking period so they can have the flexibility to complete their work. Thank you so much for the generosity. My students will be happy to see this in their assignments in Google Classroom. It will make a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Heywood

  • Varied Activities and Lesson Plans That Work

    Funded Dec 27, 2020

With the donation, I was able to put some energy and variety into my lessons. I have bought some plans for Warriors Don't Cry to infuse culturally relevant texts in my teaching. I was also able to buy some bundles for the first week of school activities. That really helped me get to know my students. My students enjoyed the activities and the writing and reading inventory activities have given me insights of my students preferences. I also bought inspirational prompts for journal writing.

I am thankful for the support.”

  • Ready Materials To Maximize Research!

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

Relief comes in many forms. Paper is gold around where we are. Notebooks are treasures and lifelines. My students and I are so thankful for your support by funding this project. I used the supplies in all my 7 classes. I have 6 academic classes and an advisory class whom I meet every Wednesday. We don't have computers in our classrooms and we have two computer labs in the whole building (for nearly 11,000 students). Competition for computer lab space can be tight at times. When students saw the paper and notebooks, they were grateful.

We used the paper to print out articles that they need in their research to facilitate their data and information gathering efforts.

The notebooks are much appreciated because they have a special place to record all their notes on the topics that they are working on. It's a great help in keeping records and research organized.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Heywood

Student engagement is a priority in the classroom. Many of my students are visual learners and any examples that I can project on the board as I explain would help capture their focus. Most of my students come to class tired from working the night shift. Whatever help I can give them to make my lessons more lively and interactive will have better the learning outcomes. A document camera will help me model note taking, research, and writing skills. We can maximize our time as we can "show and tell" at the same time. It will help awaken their imagination and make the senses work actively as they get clarifications and visuals right away.
