Imagine a softly lit, quiet space filled with captivating lights, soothing sounds, engaging toys, and a cozy swing. It’s like a playground but intended for taking a breather instead of burning off extra energy. That is what a sensory room is made for! Everything in the space is carefully chosen and placed so that individuals with disabilities such as Autism or students who have difficulties integrating their senses can relax and play in an engaging and calming manner.
By donating to our project, you will help our students with significant needs to have a sensory room that provides them with developmental support towards sensory integration, proprioception, and stimming. The sensory room becomes a safe place where students can feel comfortable to calm down, engage in productive play, stimulate their senses, and refocus for their next learning task.
Johnson Elementary homes a sensory room where many students throughout the school use it each day for the reasons listed above. Over extended use and room changes, the sensory room has lost many of it's items and is lacking materials to meet the needs of our current students. The items on this Donor's Choose will help us give our sensory room a much needed makeover and return it to a purposeful environment here at our school. All items on the list are selected so that students can be engaged with their five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. This new design for the sensory room will not only keep our students excited about coming to school but it will also help prepare them to learn and become more successful at school.
