Kids as early as six years old can make amazing things. The materials and supplies that I’m requesting for my students will not only help them to have a better art experience, it will teach them that recycling materials like plastic bags, candy wrappers, juice boxes, old clothes, shoes and more can make wonderful things that are very useful.
With the sewing machines, needles and threats we will be able to take “garbage” to a whole new level, we will make: bag packs, pencil cases, water bottle holders and so much more. I would love to give my students the opportunity to expand their imagination, to teach them that there is more than just pain and color pencils available to make amazing things.
I understand that there are places where you can go and learn how to sew, but again these kids come from a very low-income families, and sometimes their problems are bigger than we could ever imagine. I want to give them a chance by teaching them the importance of recycling, by providing them a new skill that will be very helpful later in their lives like: putting a button in their clothe, fixing a whole in their jackets etc.
In addition, every class is usually one hour. These kids love to take advantage of every minute; by having an electric pencil sharpener my kids wouldn’t have to spend too much time sharpening their color pencil, instead they will quickly come back to finish their projects. I’m looking forward to be able to introduce this sewing lesson plan. With these materials YOU CAN HELP my students to learn a new skill, a new way to recycle.
