These books will help my students see that their culture, identity and traditions are valued and accepted in our classroom! I hope to have parents come in and teach us about their cultural heritage and read in home languages. All families should feel like they matter at our school. Students deserve to be seen in literature! I know that we will be able to grow confident, self-aware children if we begin by making them feel seen and heard just as they are at a young age. Bringing literature that accurately reflects their lived experiences, home language, culture and customs is a start. Building on that with community participation, parent involvement and school-wide heritage celebrations will cement their identity and its import to those who teach, guide and learn from them.
