This year, I will be teaching a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade section of reading. While I am extremely excited about my new position, due to budget cuts there is not a lot of engaging materials for my students to read in this elective class. Many of the students entering my class are students that struggle with reading and NEED engaging, relevant topics/books in order to see the power reading has in their lives. I have selected contemporary fiction that will not only engage these reluctant readers, but will also allow us to have discussion around topics that are extremely relevant in American society. Issues like acceptance, race, identity, acknowledging and learning about differences, etc. are all explored in these novels that I selected. If you help fulfill by order, you will be helping not only make a difference my students have in my classroom, but also our future generation. My students will learn that acceptance, generosity, and empathy are social skills that can change the world that we live in!
