  • Words in Pictures

    Funded Nov 15, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donations, we have been printing away in our classroom.

Our 3 year olds need a lot of verbal and visual cues to help them navigate the day. They learn by watching and by association. When they see their name and their photos together, they learn what their name looks like, the beginning of literacy. We have printed their photos and names as daily cards for their various activities, in that way, they have independence and their peers know where they can go to play. We also have printed an alphabet that we use to match our name to, learning what our name begins with and what animal also begins the same way. Students can now recognize each other's name as well.

Our color printer has been especially important this year since we cannot take field trips to museums. We have been able to print and laminate famous art pieces for them to look at and discuss. Next week we will be exploring the art of Picasso and using our oil pastels to create bright and colorful drawings.

Having a printer in our classroom also gives us the freedom to print what they are interested in on the spot. Young children are impulsive and being able to add to the excitement by providing them with a picture of something that they want to talk about helps to enrich their conversation as they have an example to describe, also eliciting questions from their peers.

So, on behalf of my students and I, I want to thank you once again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Juliette Lim

  • Remote Teaching Technology

    Funded Sep 24, 2020

Thank you so much for helping me with purchasing this computer and mouse. Having a new technology to teach with, has made an incredible difference. Because I have to teach remotely, I needed a new and up to date computer that was able to handle the multitude of programs that I need to make my daily online lessons fun and interactive for my kindergartners.

I use my computer everyday to deliver my lessons, but also to create fun and interesting slides. New programs are coming up daily requiring a powerful machine, and this laptop met the requirements. My students benefit from this computer as I'm able to create, send and receive rich and interactive works. I can multitask and have many windows open as I meet with students whole class and small group, as well as having other teachers meeting with small groups using my links.

These times have required a lot from all of us; some have had to reinvent what you do daily, some have become teachers on top of parents, and most of us are now computer gurus. I am very thankful for your generosity and think of you everyday for having helped me in getting this computer and mouse.”

  • Words, Pictures, Art!

    Funded Dec 30, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous donation, the books are great and the kids are loving browsing through them. I've selected a wide variety ranging from grade to subject and it has been a success. The kids enjoy looking through them and reading them with a partner and using them as inspiration for their own artwork. The second graders are especially enjoying them right now, as we are learning how to draw people in action, and picture books are an amazing source of beautiful drawings. My bilingual classes are also very excited to have a few books in their native language, and enjoy listening to me reading to them, giving them a break from constant translating, also I think that the first graders feel very empowered when correcting my R's in Spanish.

Again, thank you for all that you do,”

  • Painting Our Way Into The New School Year

    Funded Sep 22, 2016

Dear Donor (AKA Mr. Husted's Sister),

We are finally on our way to using our new fancy paint cakes. In second grade, we have been learning about rural communities and how life is different there than in our urban community of the Bronx. Students are creating rural landscapes showing a farm, complete with animals and tractors and all the things that one would find on a farm, but beyond that, they are learning how to show perspective by using shades of colors and drawing things large up close and progressively smaller as they are far away. I absolutely love what they are coming up with, and their renditions of farm animals are so great. Some students were a little apprehensive about drawing animals that they had never drawn before, but I told them that I'd take pictures of their work and send it to you so that you could see how grateful we all are for your donation. I can't wait to take pictures of the final projects, and send them to you.

Again, thank you so much for your generosity,”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Juliette Lim

  • A Rainbow in Winter

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Thanks again for your most generous donations! The kids have been so excited to be able to get new paints and crayons and markers; I don't know how you feel about it, but new crayons are the best! First of all you have all of the colors, the tips are still there and they fit nicely in your hands; gone are the one inch crayons in our baskets, though to not be wasteful, I did make little care packages with the ones that we had been using since September and sent them home with some of our neediest students. Can you imagine not having crayons at home in elementary school? Wait, let me rephrase that; can you imagine not having crayons at all, regardless of your age? I've also sent home some of our old paint palettes with colors missing and worn down paintbrushes; They don't look like much so some kids got two or three palettes to have all of the colors, but boy oh boy, the kids were so excited, I got a million hugs and many pictures the next day; most of them are in my art room but some have made their way to my refrigerator! We also got these really cool new paints that look like clay, but they are super bright and opaque water colors that are so easy for the kids to use that all of their pictures are enhanced by them. The clay that we got, I am saving for my art club kids my fifth graders. They made the most colorful paper maché birds to brighten up our school, and have been selflessly donating their art to beautify our learning environment, now I want them to make something beautiful to take home to their family! We will paint them with our beautiful gouache paint that we also received! I'm not going to lie, opening the boxes really did feel like Christmas, and my kids' growing enthusiasm as I opened the boxes was very much contagious. It's because of your most generous donations that we will be be able to continue our journey through our imagination and to make rainbows to lighten up our lives!”

  • Art Everywhere!

    Funded Sep 26, 2014

My students were sooooooo excited when we opened our boxes of awesome art stuff. I heard "oooohhhhhs and aaaaahhhhhhs and how are we going to use that? what is this for? can I have some? Where does all of this stuff come from?????" Our shelf of cool materials is growing and the kids love to hear me say " you want that ? Oh yeah I've got it!!!" Some of our projects have actually been created around some of our materials, inspiration is flowing and the kids are loving it.

Since i am the art teacher of students grades K-5, we have made many projects using the materials. We've painted landscapes and cityscapes, made crowns with patterns, we've learned about cave-paintings, mixed colors and oil pastels, cut and glued awesome multimedia collages, and the fourth graders are weaving mini tapestries inspired by Native American works.

Your donation has helped to make available materials that we normally wouldn't have. It has helped students to go to some very creative places in their mind, and it will continue to do so. Your willingness to share with my students is amazing, and their experiences in art will be one of their fondest memories as they grow, your help has helped create a lasting memory, what a special thing to be able to do.

Thanks again for your generous contribution,”

  • Tree Art for a Better World!!!

    Funded Aug 26, 2014

Thank you so much for helping us adopt the trees and beautify our streets. Many things have happened while we worked on our project, a week after taking about 8 hours to build our beautiful fences, some not-so-friendly neighbors broke the stakes of two of our fences, but it didn't stop us, we ordered more and rebuilt them. A week after that the city came and took them down altogether to install their own, but we persevered, we went out and added our shells and tree necklaces, and whenever something went missing we replaced it, showing that we can't be stopped. The best part about this project was the interaction that we had with neighbors as we were building and decorating; all complementing us and thanking the kids for their hard work for you see, even if the work doesn't last and we have to replace it and change it, it has brought an awareness that the trees are there and that they are meaningful to someone. Students, parents and staff come up to me and tell me how much they love the shells and the signs we made, they have conversations about their favorite ones, and what they would've done had they gotten a chance to paint one. I feel that even If I wish our fences were still there (they were much better than the ones from the city) and that everyone loved nature as much as me and respected Other's work, I know that this ongoing project has made a difference, it has brought an awareness that wasn't there before, and what an impact it makes. We couldn't have done this without your support, and the many other materials you helped us get will last us all year. There is a video of our work on the school's website that I couldn't load onto this thank you package. If you want to see us in action go to Ps85bronx.org and scroll down to the Art and Music section, the first video is my art club making stuff and talking about our work.

Thanks again a million, you are a truly amazing person,”

  • Art in Motion, Literally!

    Funded Sep 4, 2013

    We love this Ipad!!!

So, originally I wanted to use this Ipad, for photo montage, learning how to share work on websites, and to teach students about Imovies; but now, we use it for EVERYTHING!!!

We use it to film the art club and what goes on in it, so that we can share with our school the things that we do there, the art club has very limited space, and is very coveted.

We use it to take pictures of the work we do put it on the school website, we will use it in the spring to create photo montage as well as a sort of camera to make stop-motion movies (imagine claymation) we're working on creating different outfits for our art mannequins, but I'm also using it as a research tool for students in art and for small group reading intervention. The uses are endless! My young readers love to tap the screen when they get words right, it gets them excited to read. I have recorded a few students reading, so that they can listen and watch themselves read as well, a very empowering experience, they all want to read with me now!

Thank you so much for providing us with the funds to purchase it. My students and I are extremely grateful for your generosity and willingness to care and be involved. The world would be a much better place if we could all get along, share, and care for one another. What you do not only helps my students have access to things that they would normally not have access to, but it also teaches them about generosity and that there are people out there who care!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Juliette Lim

  • Colors, Colors, Colors Everywhere!

    Funded May 8, 2013

My students have loved getting new materials this year! I mean, why order boxes of crayon with only 8 colors when we can get boxes with 64 colors; the look on one of my first grader's face when she found out that there was a Macaroni and Cheese orange crayon, was priceless! I can't say enough how amazing it is that people I have never met, that's you Elsa cause I know Erica, have shown such generosity to students that you have never met. I love telling my students how I get my materials, and they often seem confused that strangers would help me to get stuff for them to use. But I explain to them that we can all make a difference in someone else's life, some say thank you, hold doors, others give kind words and encouragement, and there are people like you who believe in the Arts and donate to projects like mine, thank you!

Erica, you're the best, and I hope that your lovely baby to be born, gets to have a fun art teacher who will get her or his project funded.

Art is amazing and ever so important, lets do our part so that children all over the world can experience it.

    Thank you again,”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Juliette Lim

  • Beauty Through a Lense

    Funded Feb 11, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donations. My students and I have been working with our new cameras. They have learned about the use of light, choosing subjects, composition, and using black and white versus colors when taking pictures. They have been having a lot of fun with them, but most importantly, they are understanding that anything can be made interesting or beautiful with intent. My students don't live in a neighborhood with streets lined with flowers and well manicured lawn, or even clean for that matter; and though they may not have cared, as it is their daily surroundings, they've begun to notice nature pushing through the concrete walls, a patch of grass growing around the fire hydrant, or even the street cat basking in the sun. Everyday things that they would have normally walked by, is now a source of interest and discussion amongst them. What else could I have asked for, students seeing beauty through a lens, seeing what no one else sees, so that their lives are a little brighter, and a future filled with possibilities.

Thanks again so much, your generosity is felt everyday.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Juliette Lim

My students are the kind of children who are excited about art, and who do not fear to express themselves. They applaud when I walk in, share their thoughts, their visions. Together we come up with ways to make those images appear in whatever format, usually using recycled goods. Photography has become something that intrigues them. How do we play with the light to render something banal into something special? How can we see beauty in a place where there isn't any to the naked eye. My students have nothing, they come to school without materials or bags, their uniforms are usually in bad shape but their enthusiasm never fails. They point to things and notice shapes and colors, and make meaning in a place where chaos reigns.
