Learning From Home
Funded Sep 15, 2020I cannot express how thankful I am for the supplies we got. We have gone through a lot of changes and challenges this school year. We started working remotely. These materials allowed my students to continue working from home but still feel like they are in the classroom. We love to put hands on books, record our thoughts on our post it notes and work on writing stories on notebooks just like we did in the classroom.
Because we started the school year remotely, distributing the school materials was a wonderful opportunity to meet with my students and families in person. It was very exciting for all of us to be able to see each other in real life and take home the supplies we need to succeed in this school year.
Thank you again for your generosity and thoughtfulness. We are very appreciative.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Kleenex® Brand and 3 other donors.High Interest Books for Kids
Funded Jul 22, 2020As we quickly transitioned into distance learning we realized that reading mattered more than ever. My students and I went home to connect through a computer screen but it was not the same. We missed each other but also we missed holding books, flipping through pages, sitting comfortably and dreaming away with books in our hands. This project allowed me to send books similar to the books we had in our classroom home with students. The titles in this project were books that my students loved.
Even though my students and I were longing for the normal days at school, reading and talking about books continued at home. We proudly pulled out our books, and discussed the stories we read or shared new facts we learned when reading informational books for example about sharks.
Being able to send books we loved to my students homes made it posible to have a more normal and comforting reading experience while distance learning. We were able to enjoy reading throughout our days at home while we adjusted to our new reality.”

Super Biblioteca
Funded Nov 13, 2019I want to thank you for your generosity. In my classroom, I teach reading using the Readers Workshop Model. The main component in this model is student choice. I believe that when students choose books to read according to topics that are important and interest them, they will take control of their own learning. This will also create long life readers and learners. Increasing the number of books in the classroom will allow children to engage in a culture of reading and learning that will last for a lifetime.
My class is bilingual. All of the students in my classroom come from Latino families who have recently adopted the U.S. as their home. These students are being educated in English as well as in their mother language, Spanish. These books are important in our classroom not only because they supply a wider range of options, but also because they allow students to learn, to enjoy and to be exposed to high levels of Spanish academic language. My students are reading books that relate to them as individuals; they learn about science and world history in the language they share with their families.
My students are loving their new books. They are reading with greater focus than ever. My students are reading everyday and they are even asking to take their book home to keep reading them. Mr. Che can I take this book home, please? I really want to know what happens at the end said Britney. The more book my students get to love the more they want to read. ”

Libros! Libros!
Funded Sep 27, 2019The new set of books that we have received thanks to your great generosity has made an enormous impact in my classroom. My students are more excited to read, they read more and for longer periods of time and with more focus. I chose a wide variety of topics and difficulty levels when selecting the new texts, my students have been able to establish stronger reading habits. My students have learned how to choose books that interest them and books that they can understand.
In my class we read everyday for about 40 to 60 minutes, which is a long time for a third grader. This is why having high interest books is crucial for my students literacy development. Typically, I model a reading skill with a mentor text such as making predictions, identifying the main idea or the personality traits of a character. Subsequently, all my students break to their favorite reading spot in the classroom to read and practice the skill taught on their own books.
The model of reading instruction I implement fosters love for literature as well as independence. As a result of this practice my students are developing a lifelong interest for books. Students have been able to identify series, authors and topics they love reading. They are so passionate they have checked similar books out at the local library and have asked there families to purchases similar books as rewards. Thanks again for your generous donation!”

More Libros, Más Books.
Funded Dec 2, 2018I am profoundly grateful for your generosity. I have been able to provide my students with new high interest books. In my classroom we love to read, write, talk and play in English and also in Spanish but keeping an engaging bilingual library is always a challenge. The books I got for my classroom library made a enormous difference in my class this year. My students were very excited to open all the boxes with "present" from you. These new books allowed me to teach more effectively how to analyze characters, their personality traits and reactions. Also, I could teach a Mystery Unit for the first time. In this unit my students learned to pay attention to different clues given by the author in order to solve a big mystery or problem.
I believe that teaching reading is not only about decoding and saying words but actually loving books and the stories in them. Reading must be a pleasure, something my students can't wait to do. I want to ensure that my students are in charge of their own reading. They learn how to choose books that they will fall in love with. Since, we all have different interest in life we also have different books we want to read. That's why I feel necessary to have a library that can meet all the expectations and passions my students have.
In the past weeks I have noticed that my student's love for reading has intensified. The books they are reading are having an evident impact on them. One of the girls in the room told me she really like the book Drama because it reminds her of the relationship with her older sister and cousins. Recently I hear them use new vocabulary when they talk. They sound more confident when they explain their thinking. The effect of reading ripples to other areas such mathematics or science, and even their social lives. These books are making a difference in these kids lives.”

Time for Libros
Funded Sep 28, 2015I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to my project. In my classroom, I teach reading using the Readers Workshop Model. The main component in this model is student choice. I believe that students who choose their own books to read according to topics that are important and interest them will not only create a positive and more effective reading, learning environment, but also create long life readers and learners. Increasing the number of books in the classroom will allow children to engage in a culture of reading and learning that will last for a lifetime.

My students are reading books that relate to them as individuals; they learn about science and world history in the language they share with their families.
My students are loving their new books. They are learning a great deal about all kind of topics such as space, sports, animal habitats, energy and the human body. Truly there is something for everybody in my classroom. When I asked one of my students what was she reading, she said: " I'm reading Las 3 amigas. Ay! Este libro me gusta mucho porque se trata de 3 niñas que siempre se andan peleando. Ud. Sabe, asi como yo y mis amigas. Wow! I love this book because it is about 3 girl friends that are always arguing. You know, like me and my friends.”

Illuminating Illustrations
Funded Dec 4, 2014Thank you for donating to our class. As the supplies arrived we opened them together. The students were overjoyed to receive the pastels, water colors, paint brushes and drawing paper. We discussed each item and how it might be used. Together students brainstormed ideas for art projects of interest. The students remembered pieces of art they loved at the DeYoung and Asian Art Museum. Students recalled learning about the artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The students know that you sent the art supplies because you care about their education and creativity! Thanks again for helping my students grow and succeed. Your kindness is deeply appreciated.”

Science Skills Soar
Funded Dec 26, 2014My students were very surprised when they saw me carrying a big unmarked box into the classroom. They had no idea what the contents of the box were. They became extremely curious and started to ask questions. What was in the box? who sent the box? Why did somebody send us a box? After I explained how the box appeared at our school I showed them the contents. The look on their faces was of pure excitement and joy. My students could not wait to start working on the science projects.
We used the science materials to deepen our understanding of many scientific concepts throughout the school year. For example, we built telescopes when we were learning about the solar system. My students took the telescopes home and observed the moon overnight. We learned the phases of the moon and that the moon orbits the earth as well as the earth orbits the sun. We even leaned about Galileo Galilei and his scientific discoveries.
The materials we received made learning much more enjoyable. The students had the opportunity to become real astronomers and have hand-on learning opportunities.”

Fan Friendly Fiction
Funded Nov 22, 2014My classroom was delighted to receive the wide variety of fiction! Our classroom library was in need of an update. Nothing inspires reading like a brand new book. We took all the other books out of the library and focused on FICTION of all types. These stories bring our dreams alive and allow us to dream anew. My students are full of imagination and thrive on tales whether realistic or fantasy. They know that you gave them these books because you care about their education. This is a dream come true! Thank you!”

Likable Library Libros
Funded Sep 16, 2014We are so excited to receive our books! It is great to have a broad selection of fiction for the students to choose the perfect book. The books range in abilities. We unwrapped them together and placed them on the chalkboard tray to display before placing them in the class library.
We are learning about differ genres of fiction. We are discovering the joys of fantasy, myths, historical fiction, realistic fiction and the like. We are asking ourselves, "What is going to happen next?" We are writing our own stories. We are reviewing stories and making recommendations to classmates. We are breaking up the story into beginning, middle and end looking for the problem, high point, and conclusion.
The students know that you community members gave the class these books because you care about their education. Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Che
