Last year my teacher stool, whose home was by the document camera, kept disappearing. Inevitably, as I walked around while teaching, I would discover it's location, under a student. In one class it seemed as though it was a race to see who could get the stool first! This year, I want to provide multiple seating options so that students can choose the best place to learn. My hope is to have a few fold-able stadium seats to create an area in front of the board for kiddos who'd like to sit on the floor with clipboards to do their work. Advisory is a time when we can do some community building and lessons on character. This past year to help with that sense of community I brought in games from home. Some of my students were in such competition with each other that they'd ask for the games the instant they saw me in the hallway! It just so happens that a major project we'll be working on this year is about goal setting and how to achieve those goals. Based around the theme of The Olympics, students will participate in games, problem solving, working as a team, and individual "events" where they will need to have a strong sense of community and teamwork that board games will help them achieve. Bonus that many of the games on my list are math based so it'll reinforce numeracy and mathematical thinking.
