This classroom project was brought to life by SONIC Foundation and 8 other donors.Listen Up: Headphones for Literature
Funded Aug 26, 2019I want to extend my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. My class set of headphones was delivered at the start of the school year, and I was so excited to share the news with my students. It feels very special to have a little piece of my family and friends in my classroom. I feel so grateful and thankful each time I glance at them or use them in my classroom. It's a constant reminder that I have support behind me from each of you. Thank you again.
During five years at Harbor School, my access to and experience with technology has been a rollercoaster. I came from a school where I had my own class set of iPads, so I was shocked to work at a school that seemingly has so many privileges but didn't even have a functional set of laptops to teach writing. There were two laptop carts for the whole school to share (30+ teachers), and very quickly the laptops were destroyed thus rendered useless. As you can imagine, it's nearly impossible to educate students to be college and career ready with inadequate technology. We were fortunate at the end of last school year to obtain a set of laptops for the English department to share. However, I soon realized that wasn't enough! I need to teach my students through the plethora of mediums available, including videos, podcasts, briefings, news radio, documentaries, and other video sources. This is why I desperately needed the headphones and have used them on weekly basis.
We used the headphones most recently when we were working on projects that examined various American Indian led activists movements in the 20th and 21st century. Students were able to access a variety of sources to learn about their topic and ultimately compile their research and created infographics. It was nice to be able to allow students to learn in different ways and let them choose the best way to absorb information. Technology in education is a wonderful way to appeal to students' varying needs and preferences. This project was another cool way to use technology and a new project format I hadn't tried before. The students enjoyed the project and enjoyed learning a new tool. We have also been using podcasts this year in class and hope to have students move to creating their own. My next project is to try and obtain quality microphones to do this. I'm looking forward to continuing to explore how I can use technology in my classroom to appeal to different learning styles and open up new modalities of expression.”

Ms. Clara
