In our classroom we read a lot of stories and use hands-on activities to demonstrate what we learned in those stories. These activities include using materials such as Play-Doh, foam, and paint to make letters, words, and numbers. They also demonstrate comprehension as they respond to these stories through art, such as creating their own underwater picture after reading about the ocean, and sculpting their favorite mammal after reading about different types of animals. My students work hard every day and have great attitudes toward learning, and I reward their efforts as frequently as I am able through positive reinforcement. While I tend to praise them throughout the entire school day and provide a variety of other incentives (playing games, sitting with friends, etc), it means a lot to them when they can take home a special prize from the class 'Treasure Box' every so often. It lets them know that I recognize the wonderful things they have been doing over a longer period of time, and motivates them to keep going. Finally, my students use whiteboards daily to practice writing and to show understanding during full-group and small-group instruction. They are an essential tool for me to know exactly where my students are at and what they still need in the middle of any lesson.
