Holding and enjoying a book is a beautiful experience and essential to a magical childhood. Unfortunately, at least half of my 24 students do not have books at home, and have few books available to them at school. These books I am hoping for are core texts to guide our learning for the rest of the year. We will write about them, talk about them, and read them again and again. Having a physical book has been shown to greatly improve reading comprehension! I want to get these quality books into the hands of my students so that they can feel the weight of their new knowledge in their hands. My only other alternative is purchasing an electronic version of each book and showing that to my students on a projector, which is difficult to connect with and far less magical. I want to grow readers, not screen-skimmers. I am particularly excited about the classroom set of "Coming to America: The Story of Immigration" by Betsy Maestro. This is a rare find of an informational text exploring the how and why in the history of American immigration. I want one for every single student to use as they research and write about immigration over several weeks at least. These texts are required for the highly effective Wit and Wisdom curriculum. The lessons have students diving deep into complex stories and information, writing as they learn, and building background knowledge. I can't wait to see what a difference it will make for my kiddos!
