Thank you so much for your donations to build our classroom library! I am grateful for your support in offering a variety of books for my students. Your donation is helping promote literacy in my classroom. My students are more engaged and excited to learn when they have a variety of books to choose from. ¡Muchas gracias!”

  • Literacy En Español! - Readers for Spanish Students

    Funded Aug 30, 2019

These books are such a welcome addition to our classroom library. Students not only have more books to choose from, but diverse themes and proficiency levels to help them find something that is interesting to them. We use the books on a weekly basis to offer students the opportunity to read for pleasure in Spanish. Several students choose their books immediately when they arrive to class to ensure that they get to read the book of their choice.

The goal of free reading in my classroom is for students to enjoy reading, but also to improve their vocabulary and reading proficiency in Spanish by reading at a level appropriate for them. Students acquire vocabulary in Spanish without even realizing when reading a book or story that is interesting and comprehensible. It is such a joy to see students reading in Spanish!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Forestell

In the last year I have started a classroom library in Spanish for my students. I have purchased many books on my own and am looking to add to my library to offer more of a variety of books to my students. We use these books on a weekly basis during Free Voluntary Reading time in which students choose a book in Spanish that interests them and is at their proficiency level. I find that students enjoy reading when they can read something that interests them and can easily read in Spanish when the text is at the appropriate proficiency level for each student. Dr Stephen Krashen, linguistic specialist, highly encourages free reading in the language classroom and through research has found that, "People acquiring a second language have the best chance for success through reading." My students have already shown growth in their reading skills since implementing free reading in my classes last year.
