I work in East Austin with Pre-K students that qualify based on their family's low income. My students have access to resources at school that their parents often cannot afford such as books, toys, and dramatic play centers. My students spend 60-90 minutes a day having free choice center time in my class. But centers are about much more than just playing. At centers, my students get the chance to learn vocabulary, learn how to talk and work with their friends, and explore content-related tools and toys that grow their content knowledge. My hope is to add more STEM based toys to my centers so that my students can begin a love of learning in those areas that could one day contribute to their career choice in the future. By carefully selecting toys that are self correcting, my students have the chance to learn independently as I work with small groups of students at my desk targeting their learning needs. I have a rotating center that changes every month from a farmer's market to a post office to a donut shop to a veterinarian so that students get a chance to encounter vocabulary that they may not otherwise know and get a chance to "play out" a career they may not have considered for the future. Every day, my babies get to explore different centers and learn with different tools, and with your support I can grow these learners with new and engaging tools.
