As a classroom community, we share just about everything: pencils, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, manipulatives, ideas, strategies, opinions... Students are able to make independent choices about where to work, who to work with, and what materials will help them accomplish their goals. This means I am responsible for anticipating the needs of each and every student in my class. So far, this group has been incredibly vocal about their needs and one thing that students mention over and over to me is how uncomfortable they are in our traditional classroom chairs. With flexible seating options that go beyond sitting in hard chairs or on the rug, my students will be able to feel comfortable in their bodies while their minds are challenged! Sometimes a student will prefer to be at their desk in their chair to practice their multiplication facts but when writer's workshop begins, they prefer to be somewhere where their body can wiggle while they write. Another may prefer to always be sitting up tall in a chair, but their feet don't reach the ground so their core gets fatigued; a desk band for their feet can help them stay energized. Let's help these students practice advocating for their needs, manage their bodies, and figure out what tools help them be their best selves!
