In order to encourage and support a lifelong love of music making, my main goal as a music educator is to make sure our students are independent musicians when they leave the classroom. One way of supporting this independent musicianship is by providing a community ukulele jam session. This event will begin with a thirty minute crash course on how to play the ukulele, presented by the students, and then end with an hour long ukulele jam session. People in attendance will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the music by singing and playing the ukulele to different songs. Why ukuleles? The affordable price and transportable size makes ukuleles easily accessible for students. The practicality of the ukulele supports their musicianship. If the students hear a song on the radio they adore, they will be able to look up the chords online and make a cover. They also provide students with the opportunity to explore their songwriting creativity by allowing them to come up with lyrics, melodies and chords. Why a community jam session? Other than listening to music, many people do not have an immersive outlet for music. The ukulele can help people find their outlet in music again. They will help students discover their own musical autonomy by being a means to explore creativity and self expression. Parents and friends will have hands on experiences with their children’s musical education. They will also be living within the musical experience and learning how to bring music directly into their homes by the teaching of their children. This community jam session will be supporting a lifelong love of music making and bonding by inclusively celebrating the independent musicianship of the students and inspiring the community to continue their musical outlets.
