I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) working as a school counselor in Idaho. I serve roughly 550 students in my building grades Pre-K through 5th grade. Our school has a high rate of students experiencing trauma, toxic stress, homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, and more. I have been working to build a trauma informed system at my school for a year now, and attending the Creating Trauma Sensitive Schools conference would allow me to better fully integrate trauma sensitive practices throughout the entire school system. The benefits of having a trauma sensitive school are numerous. This includes increased attendance, increased academic performance, increased social well being, increased emotional health, and overall better long term physical and emotional health for students. My hope is to take the tools I learn from attending the Creating Trauma Sensitive Schools conference and return to Idaho with effective tools to more fully integrate a trauma mindset to the entire school climate. Idaho, a state with 23.4% of children age 0-17 with 2 or more Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), ranking 27th in the US. Idaho, a state that ranks 43rd in teen suicides at almost double the national average. Idaho's children need school environments like the one I am working towards to give them better, healthier lives.
