  • Engaging Independent Practice for Beginning Readers

    Funded May 8, 2024

Thank you so much for contributing to my project "Engaging Independent Practice for Beginning Readers".

When the boxes arrived the students were so excited to see what our friends at Donors Choice had provided for our reading and math time. The children spent many fun filled reading sessions in small groups using the Bob books and sort the sound. Other more skill drill based groups enjoyed using the Elkonin dry erase tablets. They were a Spring time Kindergarten hit!

My next steps for this project are to share these with grade level teachers and to begin a new project this spring for additional Bob books as well as additional sets of reading rods for word building practice to use in my current classroom. These are a wonderful resource that provide immediate feedback and a fun way to practice an essential skill. Thank you for helping me bring this to my students.”

  • Teaching with Tiles

    Funded May 22, 2024

Thank you so much for contributing to my project "Teaching With Tiles".

When the boxes arrived the students were so excited to see what our friends at Donors Choice had provided for our reading and math time. After a quick introduction to how the Versatile Cases worked and how we would organize and share the supplies, the children dove in and spent the remainder of that half hour focused intently on answering questions and building patterns in their cases.

The remaining days of the year were spent in a similar way, children using the Versatiles as a reading station during our ELA block to review and strengthen comprehension and phonic skills.

My next steps for this project are to share these with current grade level teachers and to begin a new project this fall for additional books. These are a wonderful resource that provide immediate feedback and a fun way to practice an essential skill. Thank you for helping me bring this to my students.”

  • Making Math Practice Meaningful

    Funded Dec 15, 2023

Thank you so much for contributing to my project "Making Math More Meaningful".

When the boxes arrived the students were so excited to see what our friends at Donors Choice had provided for our math time. After a quick introduction to how the supplies were to be used and how we would organize and share them, we started using using many of them. The children have been enjoying comparing numbers using the balance and feeding flashcards into the robot to self check as they work to retain basic addition and subtraction facts.

My next steps for this project are to introduce these products in the fall next year so that my student will be able to use the light tables to learn letter and number formations in sand as well as building with light table manipulatives.

These are a wonderful resource that provide a fun way to practice an essential skill. Thank you for helping me bring this to my students”

  • Helping Little Hands Master Handwriting

    Funded Nov 27, 2023

Thank you so much for contributing to my project "Helping Little Hands Master Handwriting".

When the boxes arrived the students were so excited to see what our friends at Donors Choice had provided for our handwriting time. After a quick introduction to how the supplies were to be used and how we would organize and share them, we started using many of them. Since this project's completion, we have learned all upper and lowercase letters and these supplies are now mainly used by children to reinforce and to improve upon the form of their print letters.

My next steps for this project are to introduce these products in the fall next year so that my student will be able to use the tweezers to strengthen hand muscles while we learn our letter forms and then to have the tracing tiles as well as the construction and magnetic boards to practice form.

These are a wonderful resource that provide a fun way to practice an essential skill.

Thank you for helping me bring this to my students”

  • Creating with Kinders

    Funded Jul 31, 2023

Thank you so much for contributing to my project "Creating with Kinders".

When the boxes arrived the students were so excited to see what our friends at Donors Choice had provided for our classroom. We immediately began sharing the beautiful picture books about character just like them, starting their school careers in Kindergarten. We also began our very next day with wonderful, age-appropriate crayons and chunky pencils as well as a full supply of glue sticks - no more sharing! That second day was also a fantastic choice time and indoor recess. The children took turns visiting each of our new building activities that I located at different classroom tables. We rotated through them as the children became acquainted with how each set of building materials connected and worked together. By the second recess time they had developed favorites and now the kids hope for rainy days just to get extra time with marble run and magnatiles! Their creativity is growing by leaps and bounds in every corner of our room.”

My students enjoy books. They look forward to the new books I add to the class library each week and their favorite day is always book shopping day. This is when they fill their personal book bins with materials to read for the upcoming week. I've used bonus points and so many other low cost ways to buy fanciful and enticing fiction books at their levels, and this year I finally bought enough flexible seating so that everyone has his/her own seat to read in wherever brings them the most peace and joy. The one piece that has not been addressed well in my room is my nonfiction collection. What my super second graders need is really great quality texts for them to add to their book bins and explore with partners about our science topics. Our town has a great science curriculum with enjoyable explorations for the kids, but the children don't retain a lot about the topics because the study is done in isolation. Having them immersed in the studies of engineering, matter, seed dispersal, ecosystems, or animal adaptations, will use their joy of reading to help them move beyond the fun activities and into an understanding of and love for science. It is my hope to have reading time simultaneously be science time and that when we do our hands on explorations, the children can share out all of the wonderful facts they have been collecting as science detectives when we read independently each day.
