Students attending PHS live in a small rural community on the eastern side of New Mexico. Ninety percent of the 800 students enrolled at PHS receive free or reduced lunch. A large majority of the student's families (and often students) are employed by local dairies, ranches, and farms. We have a high percentage of ELL students whose families travel here as migrant workers. These students are used to working out in the fields to help their families put food on the table; sitting in a classroom is not always valued when they are just trying to survive. My only hope to engage these students in math is to teach as visually and kinesthetically as I can. I encourage and guide them to develop mathematical meaning from hands-on discovery learning.
