When technology like our chromebooks are effectively integrated in our classroom, the quality of work, academic acquisition and confidence have tremendously improved. For instance, some of our students who struggle to capture their thoughts on paper due to poor handwriting skills or organizational deficits are able to express themselves more successfully through text to voice applications using chromebooks. Differentiating instruction through the use of chromebooks will provide both general education teachers and specialist accurate insight into our students cognitive abilities. We have leveled the playing field and their voices can be heard! Having access to tablets and computers have also improved our students access to curriculum and allowed our students to gain confidence in areas they previously struggled. One chromebook can enable a student with developmental reading disabilities to interact with text by matching the text with the audio recording and dramatically reduced anxiety and stress they typically exuded while reading. Research shows that “technology can reduce or eliminate barriers to learning for students in special education. It allows them to be more independent, keep up with their peers, gain self-confidence, and collaborate with classmates.” We currently have two chromebooks and one tablet which minimizes our ability to consistently serve our 23 student’s diverse needs. Please help us give them a voice so we can "hear" their greatness!
