The make up of our student population continues to grow and change. As an educator, I strive to help my students see themselves in the books we read. I love to expose my students to a variety of texts while in a comfortable environment. These resources will allow my students the opportunity to be comfortable while reading and learning and expose them to new books. Diversity allows students the opportunity to broaden their vantage point and see life in a variety of ways. I truly believe that providing my students the opportunity to read a variety of texts helps them to learn vital skills such as empathy, relationship building, and the importance of being understanding towards those who are different than themselves. Our school has been diligently working to change the culture of our school to a more positive environment. Through more engaging techniques that strive to meet the needs of all of our students, we are seeing relationships strengthen, an increase in trust and excitement over learning, and increased student achievement. The books in this project will allow my students to engage in meaningful conversations, find comparisons between themselves and the characters in the books, and provide opportunities for them to write about what they've read. The flexible seating will allow my students to read in a more relaxed and comfortable setting and can also be used for small groups when students are engaging in reading discussions. We all learn better when we're comfortable and these seating options will provide us with several choices that will maximize the learning process.
