The entire experience of reading books puts the reader into someone else’s shoes. Reading books gets my students emotionally invested in the world the character inhabits. It also exercises a teacher’s ability to empathize and have more success seeing the world from a student’s perspective. Fictional stories are filled with great role models, and their actions influence and stick with my students. Not only does this inspire them to do more helpful and kind things for their peers and also their teachers, it also gives them a library of positive role models and examples to share with our class.
These class set of books will allow me to create hands-on engaging lessons for my fourth graders to practice a variety of literacy skills in our Project-based Learning approach.
