These items will help all of the students in my school. I am a school counselor and I took an inventory from teachers about what they have, or could be provided with, in order to create a calming corner. This would be an area inside each classroom that would be accessible to struggling students. We all have bad days, and when that happens, these corners can be used to help shift the moods so students can learn coping strategies without leaving the classroom.
The glitter glue and water bottles will allow us to make calming bottles for each classroom. The brain teasers will help to distract the students from what they are feeling at the moment, and help them regroup to get on with the rest of their day. The squishes will aid students having an outlet they can tell their struggles to. They are also fun to touch and can help relieve stress.
Teaching students ways to cope and making some of these items available to them to learn these valuable skills and self regulation is important for resiliency. Over time, these efforts to restore self-regulation allow the person to move on with their life, stronger and more resilient than ever.
